Best Wi-Fi Routers for January 2017

google-wifi-2017What is needed on a high-end wireless router?

The previous recommendations were to use routers with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, and now everything points towards Wi-Fi 802.11ac. The biggest advantages of Wi-Fi 802.11ac are that it offers better reach and higher theoretical maximum speeds.

WirelessWi-Fi 802.11ac uses the band of the 5GHz for its transmissions, band that usually has less connected devices, experiences less interference than the one of 2.4GHz and therefore reaches greater speeds.

These devices have some advanced features such as a built-in VDSL2 modem: it would not be necessary to connect your new router to the one provided by your ISP (you would have an all in one). Good coverage is required if you want to ensure that all rooms have Wi-Fi signal. Thanks to the integration of USB ports, the best routers can now connect to printers and external hard drives.

The four best wireless routers of early 2017

Google Wifi

We could not start this short list without first talking about a titan born of titans, Google Wi-fi. To bring the internet to every corner of your home, the best device for this is Google Wi-Fi. Google Wi-fi only needs two things:

  • A mobile device with an Internet connection, such as Android phone or iPhone.
  • A Google account

A Security Advantage is periodic updates that will keep hackers away from your private things. The price/value rate is quite high so it becomes a viable option. The cost is $161 for one and $372 for set of 3 at Amazon.

Linksys EA6900-EJ AC1900 router

The Linksys EA6900 AC1900 Smart Wifi includes dual 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless bands with data rates up to N600 Mbps + AC1300 Mbps, well suited for intense multimedia applications such as streaming video or online multiplayer play.

Beamforming Technology

Beamforming focuses the Wi-Fi signal directly on your smartphones, tablets, and laptops instead of distributing a generic signal. The result is a much more efficient network with a wider reach.
If your device does not have to strain to receive data, it will not only increase the efficiency but also preserve the battery life of all connected devices in the network.

The price of this device is excellent, considering the great features it has, $200.

TP-LINK Archer C3200

  • Gigabit wireless tri-band router AC3200 Mbps
  • Dual band (2.4 GHz / 5 GHz)
  • 5x Gigabit Ethernet, 1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0
  • Dual core processor at 1GHz

Having 6 antennas available on the TP-Link Archer AC3200 you will be able to cover much of wireless equipment and devices. It has two 5GHz bands that support 802.11ac. Everything works through TP-Link Smart WiFi technology that automatically selects the most appropriate frequency band. It offers a simple management interface along with advanced options.

Price: about $260

TP-LINK Archer C9

  • Dual Band 1900Mbps Wireless AC Router
  • 600 Mbps at 2.4 GHz and 1300 Mbps at 5 GHz
  • 1xUSB 3.0 ports, 1xUSB 2.0 5xGibabit Ethernet

TP-Link Archer C9 is a relatively inexpensive router with very good specifications. It supports 1300Mbps 802.11ac, has a good software and a very convenient design to not attract attention. The included modem only supports DSL and not VDSL 2. The price is around $130.

Sony Bravia OLED TV 2017

Sony just revealed its flagship XBR-A1E Bravia 4K OLED TV on CES 2017. It is very very thin. Not as thin as LG OLED W7 Signature model but it is very thin. All of the electronic components in the new Sony Bravia OLED TV had to be moved to the fold-out stand at the back. The stand back cover also hides all cables so you can now use your Sony Bravia OLED as part of the interior design with no cables hanging around.

Sony comes as a second player to OLED TV market which was monopolized by LG for several years. We’re very happy to hear that since more choice is always better. It also means that OLED technology has proven advanced enough for Sony to base its Bravia TVs on it.
The A1E Bravia is going to be available in 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch sizes. Sony hasn’t released prices yet, but as a guide, we can use prices from LG OLED TVs which will from around $2,000 for B7 models and go up to $20,000 for W7 signature models.
We can also guess that the only common part between Sony XBR-A1E 4K and LG OLED 4K counterparts will be OLED display. All electronic internals, software, image processing technologies will be specific to Sony. And this can make it quite a different TV since display makes up only a small part of the overall experience (even though quite a significant part in my opinion).
Sony OLED A1E TV is going to support both HDR10 and Dolby Vision high dynamic range standards. It is a step up from the previous year Sony 4K TVs which only supported HDR10 standard.
Another innovative feature introduced in Sony XBR-A1E is the way it reproduces sound. OLED display acts as a high-frequency speaker. Actuators embedded behind the screen vibrate and make OLED screen produce sound. And it doesn’t seem to cause any jitter on the picture. We’re yet to see exact measurements on this but this is an exciting new technology which may bring TV sound to the next level.
Bottom line is that if you’re on the market for an OLED TV you now have a choice between TVs from two major brands. If you want OLED you are no longer have to limit your choice with just one vendor. Now you can compare and get the best TV experience which matches your expectations.

Coolest TVs on CES 2017

2017 CES proved to be very exciting in TV department. We saw TVs which impressed us at design, picture, sound and price.

We will start with LG OLED TVs. The design of the top LG W7 signature OLED introduced a new category of wallpaper TVs. Before even thinnest OLED TVs had a bulky bar stuck at their bottom, back or somewhere else where all the computing power and ports were located. In LG W7 signature OLED it all changed with an introduction of a thin transparent cable which runs from the panel to the separate ports and computing block. This allowed OLED panel to become 2.5mm wallpaper thin and look like a poster on the wall but with full TV functionality. And also this gave LG some freedom like integrated premium speakers into the TV. Dolby Atmos soundbar delivers 60 watt over 7 channels. Overall this is the most amazing TV we ever saw and hopefully, things will keep moving in this direction. Maybe in several years all TVs will become credit card thin. LG W7 comes in two sizes. 65-inch model which weighs just 17 pounds and 77-inch model which weighs 27 pounds.

Sony followed LG on OLED route with an introduction of A1E series of OLED TVs in the United States. These TVs will begin selling in US later this year. It features an interesting technology when a screen of the TV acts as a speaker by producing vibrations. The OLED panels seem to be provided by LG though this is not confirmed at this moment. Below are some Sony 1AE specs:

  • OLED display
  • 55-, 65- and 77-inch sizes
  • HDR compatible (HDR10 and Dolby Vision)
  • Works with Google Home
  • Acoustic Surface audio technology
  • Android TV operating system

On a budget side but with premium features Xiaomi impressed us with ultra-slim Mi TV  4. This TV is just 4.9mm thick and is thinner than your iPhone 7 at 7.1mm. Xiaomi Mi TV 4 will be available in three sizes: 49-inches, 55-inches and 65-inches. Similar to LG W7 all electronics is now located in Mi TV Bar separate from the actual TV panel. Prices are expected to be lower than $2,000.

Another TV-related product which impressed us on CES 2017 is Sony VZ1000ES laser short throw projector. It delivers amazing picture quality and doesn’t have to be placed far from the screen. It just needs to be centimeters from the wall to produce an amazing picture. The only negative side for it is $25,000 price which puts it out of reach for most of the consumers.
