There were cases when people purchased “brand new” Kindles at a great discount on craigslist.org and the like only to find out that Amazon has blacklisted the device serial number because the original owner reported it stolen. In this case you essentially stuck with a device that can never work with Amazon eBook store. To my knowledge Amazon will not help you find the original owner either. Sending an email to that address with document attached will start the conversion process. Amazon servers will convert the document and send it wirelessly straight to your Kindle device. Please note that Amazon will charge you 15 center per megabyte of resulting document. This amount is rounded up so you will pay at least 15 cents per conversion.

If you don’t want to pay for the conversion or don’t have wirelessВ connectivity, you can send the email with the same document to the same email but on @free.kindle.com domain. In this case rather than sending the resulting document to your Kindle, Amazon will email it back to you. You can then transfer the document to Kindle manually.

To avoid accidental or malicious charges, Amazon doesn’t accept document conversion emails from just any address. You need to whiltelist sender in “Your Kindle Approved E-Mail List” on “Manage Your Kindle” page. Emails from all other senders will be ignored.

This conversion method doesn’t work for Kindle apps such as Kindle for PC, Kindle for Android, Kindle for iPhone/iPad/iPod, etc. This is because there are native application for these platforms that support document formats in question and they should be used to access these documents.

  1. Kindle DX owner. I have moved and at my new home I get a very weak signal on WhisperNet (Verizon??). Some days my blog subscriptions will not download. This is getting frustrating, as well as the fact that I am not getting my money’s worth on the news subscriptions. Is there anyway that I can download blogs on Kindle for my PC and then transfer to my DX?

    John Payne, Oxford, MS

  2. I inadvertently bought three books on a second kindle account that I have. I’d like to merge them with my primary account and deregister the secondary one. Can i do that? My secondary account is j*****@s*****.net

    thank you.

    J.

  3. OK, so the ability to edit these comments is simply too high tech for this site, so I’ll burn up some more bytes retyping my half asleep, typo’ed comment:

I would also like to know about any lists of free Kindle books.

  4. Why it’s an ad for a 4 star rated, 96KB Kindle book for 99 cents that looks pretty good. Hmmmmm… Guess my question has been answered.

  5. You can see all the free books Amazon.com has by going to Shop in Kindle Store on the Kindle Menu (press menu button – select Shop. Once online at the Kindle Store type free ebooks in the search box. That should give you a list of Amazon free ebooks. Also, go to http://www.manybooks.net and you will be able to download free ebooks to your Kindle. Be sure to select the Kindle format .azw prior to downloading.

  6. How can I un stick a book that I bought and cannot get into it. It just goes to the book cover and no further

  7. I understand how to delete a book from the home page. How do you delete a book that does not have the Left Arrow? I have 2 dictionarys I want removed, strange they do not appear at Amazon.

  8. I want to un-register my Kindle and then re-register on another account. Will I lose the gift certificates I have with my current account?

  9. I have a mac but the operating system is below the requirement for the “Kindle for Mac app” (my OS is 10.4.11 – tried to download the free app anyway but it doesn’t work). Is there a way I can get around this? If I buy the Kindle, will I still be unable to read books on my mac?

  10. Have a problem of the text bar at the top of my kindle which blocks the first two lines of the page. I cannot seem to remove it. what should I do?

  11. Sorry to be thick but still trying to work out how to gift my ebooks. You say click on the ‘gift’ button on the books page. is this a page on the Kindle itself or the website?

  12. Regarding book lending, that feature is now active for Kindles. It has the same limitations as Nook offers: An eligible book can be loaned to a friend for 14 days. That book can only be loaned once. After being loaned out, you cannot loan that book ever again. Also, publishers have restrictions on which books they allow to be loaned. In my experience with the first book someone loaned me, the book does stay on the Kindle beyond the 14 days, as long as you don’t turn on the 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity during that time.

  13. How can I remove the google/inernet bar from the top of my kindle screen??
Got it there by accident and it’s annoying. THanks!

  14. I did some long due updates to the FAQ including Free Kindle Books answer, answer to the audiobooks in the car and updated book lending answer.

    Keep these questions coming ;)

  15. Greetings,
I am a student and before I commit to a Kindle DX for primarily ebooks from an online university, I need to know if the Kindle DX Graphite has the functionality to “unlock the Protectedpdf eBooks, the eBooks require Adobe Reader and Java.”

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  16. I am interested in buying a Kindle. very new to this so forgive my ignorance. I want to know if I can download books directly to the Kindle 3 from a Australia or New Zealand, or do I have to buy the Kindle 3G model in order to do so. Can you help? Thanks for your help.

  17. I have the kindle app on my HTC evo (Android) phone. I’ve downloaded books before but now the app won’t even allow me to log into my amazon account. I tried going to the amazon site on my phone to buy the book and it tells me no device registered.
    Can anyone help?

I also have the latest app downloaded.

  18. It’s seriously problematic that not all the books can show page numbers. I use some of them for academic research and must know page numbers for citation. How can I tell before buying a book whether page numbers will show on Kindle?

  19. I will be traveling in Africa and Europe for a month; what do I need to do to ensure that I have full use of my Kindle 2 and do I have to purchase anything? Trip is in 2 weeks. Thanks.

  20. Just to point out one IMPORTANT feature of the Kindle. It cannot fast forward Audible(.com) files. It is only possible to “skip ahead 30s” each key press. This is a great disadvantage. In fact, makes it impossible to use in bed, as falling asleep means having to press “skip ahead” for 10 minutes to get back where you were listening before.

  21. I would like to ask someone familiar with the Kindle if it would be good for my work, I am the OSHA compliance officer for a construction company, I carried 2 “milk crates” of refracene materials when I first started, now I am using a laptop, with most of the files in PFD format.( 4 large OSHA files and approximately 200 MSDS)But this too, is not covenant, as I have to walk job sites with foreman and need the material handy to show them what I am talking about.
Can anyone advise me if the Kindle would be helpful in this situation?

  22. Have a problem on the screen of my kindle. It blocks 1/5th of the right size of the page on the screen. Instead of characters, it appears a fuzzy background related to one of the pictures which appear when the kindle is not in use.

    Thank you

  23. My daughter would like to read german books with a german-english dictionary as the default kindle dictionary. I read that the kindle will not look up works that start with a capital letter which is in german all nouns. Has this been fixed in the kindle 3?

  24. I have a Kindle and would like to buy one for my sister in a nursing home. She doesn’t have a credit card and couldn’t get one, so I would need to manage purchases for her. Is it possible for me to buy another Kindle in my name or hers with a separate account, but use the same credit card I’m using for my own Kindle purchases?

  25. Why can’t we order books from Amazon UK? I love British mysteries but Amazon does not carry a full author selection. How can I get around this?

  26. @Robert

I would not advice on Kindle for that matter. If you are looking to communicate via a tablet, either use the I-Pad, or something similar like the new Samsung (not having either of them). The clear advantage is touch- and color screen, as well the possibility to use AutoCad, Outlook, etc, Kindle does not have any of these features. Understandably, the price is abit steeper, but I used the I-Pad on some construction projects myself to communicate with Site Supervisors and Contractors, and it clearly beats my old Toshiba.

  27. ROBERT – You’ll want to slit your wrists if you use your Kindle for on-site construction business! YEs, it works well in low light and bright light conditions, but it HAS NO MOUSE! The “5-position selector” switch is about 1995 in terms of navigating technology, and the only way to click on things is to go thru the whole menu and get there. It’s maddening…keep your laptop. If you have an office or pickup….get an IPAD. It’s not good in bright light conditions, but at least you can get to a document within a day! And the browser?? oy veyyy, same navigation problems, and the typing button keys are about the size of the collar buttons on a men’s preppie shirt…teensy!

  28. KAREN, you bet you can use your credit card to purchase a Kindle for your sister. My Kindle name is NOT the same as my email name…so just name her Kindle differently than yours and you can manage both devices from your account. If she can pick books, then register her email as a qualified user, and you can both get books for her on your credit card.

  29. i found a kindle back in november/december i sent an email to the email address located in the kindle regitry and never heard back fom anyone. just turned it back on and can’t find the email now. can i now use it since the owner never replied to my email or what else can i do with it.

  30. If i have 2 kindles, and i want a title on one kindle, but not the other, is there a way to delete permanently off of one but leave on the other?

    thank you…..

  31. Is the Kindle in color or no? The Game pics you have posted are in color, but for some reason, I can’t find anywhere that tells me if the Kindle screens will only show in black and white or if they will show in color.

    Thanks!

  32. How do I move the ebook file from the pc into my kindle? I have done it before but can not now.

  33. I tired converting documents from epub to pdf to add to my kindle but only the first 10 pages converted and the rest is blank. When i plugged in the kindle to my pc i tired to review the books and they all came up perfect, its just on the reader i cant get the whole book. Is there a limit as to how many pages they can convert?

  34. @rachel

first off, pdf is the wrong format to switch the document to, try .mobi or .prc instead

second, without mentioning what program you are using to do the document conversion, people are very unlikely to be able to be able to help you

    @angie

connect your kindle to the pc, it should mount as a drive. copy the file to the documents directory on the kindle and then it should show up (if it’s in a supported format)

  35. Help my kindle won’t wake :( tried to hold wake button for 30 sec etc green light comes on and flashes but still won’t wake. Help please suffering from kindle withdrawal .

  36. Is it possible to have a free.kindle.com email address without a physical device i.e. just having Kindle on iPad, PC etc.?

  37. johnpeavoy,

There is no need to – there are many apps for iPad/PC/Android that can open document formats without needing to convert them to azw
