There were cases when people purchased “brand new” Kindles at a great discount on craigslist.org and the like only to find out that Amazon has blacklisted the device serial number because the original owner reported it stolen. In this case you essentially stuck with a device that can never work with Amazon eBook store. To my knowledge Amazon will not help you find the original owner either. It works via email. Each Kindle device has email address on @kindle.com domain associated with it. You can look up these addresses on “Manage Your Kindle” page on amazon.com. Sending an email to that address with document attached will start the conversion process. Amazon servers will convert the document and send it wirelessly straight to your Kindle device. Please note that Amazon will charge you 15 center per megabyte of resulting document. This amount is rounded up so you will pay at least 15 cents per conversion.

If you don’t want to pay for the conversion or don’t have wirelessВ connectivity, you can send the email with the same document to the same email but on @free.kindle.com domain. In this case rather than sending the resulting document to your Kindle, Amazon will email it back to you. You can then transfer the document to Kindle manually.

To avoid accidental or malicious charges, Amazon doesn’t accept document conversion emails from just any address. You need to whiltelist sender in “Your Kindle Approved E-Mail List” on “Manage Your Kindle” page. Emails from all other senders will be ignored.

This conversion method doesn’t work for Kindle apps such as Kindle for PC, Kindle for Android, Kindle for iPhone/iPad/iPod, etc. This is because there are native application for these platforms that support document formats in question and they should be used to access these documents.

  6. Robert,

You can unregister your Kindle via Manage Your Kindle page on Amazon.com or just call amazon support (see contact information above). This will prevent anyone to buy books from your account.

Before doing that you can try to send a document to your Kindle with your contact information so that the person who found it would have a chance to return it. A friend of mine recently lost an iPhone at the airport and somebody found and went to the trouble of calling me to get his contact info and later send the phone via UPS.

  14. In April or so of this year, Kindle said that “later this year” Kindles would be able to borrow books from “over 11000 libraries.”(because Nook is able to do so) Do you know if this is really going to happen and when? If it is already possible, how can it be done?

  15. When I try to zoom the simple HTML table in kindle the text is hidden (cut off) when the zooming content exceeds the current reader screen. Is there any option to view the hidden content or to make them wrap to the next page?

  16. Thanks for your previous answer. I have narrowed it down to the fact that I want a 3G one because I want to use it “on the road” to access the internet in a basic way. But NOW, what is the difference between these two 3G models offered. One is $189 and the other is $139. Does the cheaper one mean I will have to look at advertisements all the time?
    1) Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology ($189)
    2) Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology – includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers ($139)

  17. Carolsue,

Not all the time. Author pictures in the screensaver are replaced with ads and there is a small ad on the very last page of the book. But it is not like you will be asked to buy cheap plane tickets between the lines on every other page.

  18. Hello,

Two questions. 1) Does anyone know if a new software update is coming and if so will it show the cover of the book one is reading when you put the kindle to sleep, instead of the few screensavers the wi-fi/3g version shows? And 2) will the kindle 3 eventually allow one to choose which credit card one wants to use via the kindle when buying books rather than using the computer to change the card via one click?

    Thanks.

    Shane

  21. I am reading a Spanish novel in efforts to improve my Spanish. I am thinking of buying a kindle because i someone told me that a Spanish-English Dictionary can be put on a Kindle so when you place the cursor on a word in the Spanish novel/book it will default (or at least easily go to) the Spanish-English dictionary?
    Is this true??

Kindle for PC app doesn’t have text-to-speech. This feature is exclusive to eInk Kindle devices that have audio (except Kindle 1 and Kindle 4 non-touch)

  25. Hola, en el pc me muestra el disco kindle lleno de libros que he copiado como archivos, y en el kindle no me los muestra, por donde los busco? Mil gracias

  26. How do I use text-to-speech with a kindle that has a virtual keyboard? Please provide step-by-step instructions.

    Thanks,
    Mary Pat

  27. Mary Pat,

The new $79 Kindle 4 does not have the ability to use text to speech functions. No speakers or headphone jack. When the Kindle Touch starts shipping, though, we’ll keep an eye out for any complications and post instructions if they seem useful.

  28. Kindle does not have a text-to-speech function. Also it cannot play music. You can only read something. If you want to listen, you need to buy more expensive model – Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire. Also you can buy any older model.

  29. Paul, it depends which kindle you are talking about.

the kindle keyboard does have text to speach, play music, etc.

I’m nor surprised to see this dropped from the $79 kindle mini, but is it gone from the kindle touch as well?

  30. David,

It is definitely not gone from the Kindle Touch. When the Kindle Touch starts shipping, it will do so with all the functionality of the Kindle Keyboard aside from open 3G access

  31. I am reading the 4-book bundle of Game of Thrones. For a while the real page numbers were showing in the iOS kindle software. At some point they disappeared. How can I get this to show once again?

  32. My Kindle screen is frozen and I can’t fix it by reboot so now I’m going to buy another Kindle. I want to know how I handle purchases for my new Kindle. Should I choose a different name and/or email address for my new one?

  33. At first try to restart you Kindle. Very often it is software problem, not hardware. You can buy as many Kindles as you want for one account. There is advantage doing that – you will have access to all your books from all your Kindles.

  34. I am planning on getting the newest version of Kindle Reader: Kindle Fire, the only snag is that Kindle is not sold in Nigeria. But I really do need it for my academic work. So I am wondering if there is the possiblity of jailbreaking it so that I can use that here. Can anyone help pls?

  35. francis mekas,

We expect the Kindle Fire to be rooted almost immediately, actually. Amazon doesn’t care enough about locking it down to make the task a big deal. That said, I don’t think you’ll be able to access most of the Amazon web services after that happens, which could significantly reduce the value of the tablet to you. Might be best to wait and see if anybody finds a workaround in a month or two.

  36. I am using Kindle for Mac and recently, I found a book listed in my archive that I did not download. I can’t figure out how to delete it as it isn’t listed in Manage my Kindle. It is not a book I would even accidentally buy as it is not in English which is my only language. Is there any way to delete it? A minor issue I guess but it is bugging me.

  37. I don’t see a lot of difference in having a Harry Potter ebook and having Harry Potter audiobooks like they already do.

  38. Regarding the Kindle fire: Does anyone know how I can get to my specific content on the my yahoo page? If I select ‘my yahoo’ on the yahoo site I get some generic information that certainly is not my content that is on my yahoo. For example: I cannot see my stock portfolio, my sports scores, my weather selections etc.

  39. I want to buy my mom a Kindle Fire for x-mas. I also want to have 3 books on it when I give it to her. She lives hundreds of miles away so this isn’t someone in my house. If I register the Fire on my account and load the books then are the books still on it when I transfer the Fire to my mom on x-mas day?

P.S. I do not have any desire to have the books I am buying her. I would prefer they aren’t reflected on my account, but I suppose I’ll have to deal with that later.

  40. Sean,
You have the ability to send a Kindle eBook to anybody with an email address, last I checked. Just buy it as a gift using the “Give as Gift” button and send it to her immediately after she receives the Kindle. Acceptance is simple. When the device is registered to her account they will be automatically available, assuming she accepts the gifts rather than returns them for store credit.
