It looks like Amazon has updated the feature list for the International Kindle.
Basic Web (experimental web browser) and blog subscriptions are not longer available in Mexico, Hong Kong and Japan. So for now this feature is going to be exclusive to US customers.
Update: It looks like Amazon has changed their mind again – browser support is back for these countries but not blogs.
Another good place to download free books for your Amazon Kindle is http://www.munseys.com/. Main website itself is a bit heavy for Kindle Basic Web to render so you can use section of the website that is specifically optimized for mobile browsing: http://www.munseys.com/joomla/. There you can browse books by category. Within categories you can search. Unfortunately you can’t search all of the categories at once and you can only search by book title.
Still it’s a very nice place to get books. Books are in Mobipocket PRC format and most have usable table of contents. As of 3/1/2009 munseys.com boasts 23,853 books in it’s collection.
It is perfectly possible to access your Gmail account using Amazon Kindle browser. All you need to do is visit the mobile version at http://m.gmail.com rather than full version. Loading full version will cause some kind of error after you enter your login and password. I don’t think it would render well anyway.
So here you go: you can now send and receive emails using your Amazon Kindle anywhere there is WhisperNet (read Sprint) coverage absolutely free of charge courtesy of Amazon :)
