Daily Deals: All God’s Creatures, Zoe Sophia’s Scrapbook: An Adventure in Venice and HandyMate PRO

All God's CreaturesToday Amazon offers All God’s Creatures by Carolyn McSparren just for $1.99

Often compared to the novels of James Herriot, All God’s Creatures follows the life of a woman veterinarian in modern Tennessee. From an unlikely start as a white-glove debutante in the 1960’s to a sexism-defying launch in vet school to the adventures, sorrows, joys and oddities of a long veterinary practice, our heroine spins tales of the animals and people who share her life.

Here are one of reader’s review of this book:

All God’s Creatures is a full fledged local color novel chock full of vivid characters, of both the two and four legged varieties.

The novel traces the life of Maggie McLain, the spunky woman vet. Masterfully written, All God’s Creatures weaves together a series of vignettes into a beautiful testament to the power of love, devotion and spirit.

Whether you are an animal lover or not, you will chuckle at the antics of Maggie and company as they build a thriving veterinary practice and struggle to keep their human relationships on an even keel.

Ms. McSparren has done her research and writes with authority. Page by page, she pulls you into her book with her wonderful humor and descriptive prose.

All God’s Creatures was a pleasure to read.” — S. Rozanski

Zoe Sophia's Scrapbook: An Adventure in VeniceZoe Sophia’s Scrapbook: An Adventure in Venice by Elisa Smalley, Claudia Mauner. Today only you can get this book for $1.99

Grade 1-4-Using the popular diary format, this travelogue takes its spunky nine-year-old heroine and her dachshund from Manhattan to visit her great-aunt in Venice. They tour museums, shop for masks, ride a gondola, and observe a glassblower. Double-page watercolor-and-ink illustrations, as well as smaller framed “snapshots,” are at once aesthetically pleasing and comical. Suspense is introduced when Zoe’s dog disappears, but gondolier Ludovico saves the day in an endearing scene involving concerned faces stained with spaghetti al nero. The book offers bits of information, appealing characters, and a sense of the majesty and grandeur of Italy’s palaces and piazzas; it will interest armchair and authentic travelers alike. Removing the dust jacket reveals a labeled map on the cover. Pair this title with Christina Bjork’s Vendela in Venice (R & S, 1999), Candace Fleming’s Gabriella’s Song (Atheneum, 1997), or the Classical Kids CD Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery for further insights into the city’s charms. — Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library
