What happens if I buy a stolen Kindle?
There were cases when people purchased “brand new” Kindles at a great discount on craigslist.org and the like only to find out that Amazon has blacklisted the device serial number because the original owner reported it stolen. In this case you essentially stuck with a device that can never work with Amazon eBook store. To my knowledge Amazon will not help you find the original owner either. So if you do decide to buy a Kindle from stranger on craigslist, verify that it will register to your account on the spot. There is no guarantee that the device will not be reproted stolen later but at least you know that it wasn’t at the time of sale.

How can I convert my personal documents to make them readable on Kindle?
While Kindle supports many document formats natively, some documents like .DOC, .RTF, .HTM etc need to be converted. You can use Amazon online document conversion service for that.
It works via email. Each Kindle device has email address on @kindle.com domain associated with it. You can look up these addresses on “Manage Your Kindle” page on amazon.com. Sending an email to that address with document attached will start the conversion process. Amazon servers will convert the document and send it wirelessly straight to your Kindle device. Please note that Amazon will charge you 15 center per megabyte of resulting document. This amount is rounded up so you will pay at least 15 cents per conversion.
If you don’t want to pay for the conversion or don’t have wirelessВ connectivity, you can send the email with the same document to the same email but on @free.kindle.com domain. In this case rather than sending the resulting document to your Kindle, Amazon will email it back to you. You can then transfer the document to Kindle manually.
To avoid accidental or malicious charges, Amazon doesn’t accept document conversion emails from just any address. You need to whiltelist sender in “Your Kindle Approved E-Mail List” on “Manage Your Kindle” page. Emails from all other senders will be ignored.
This conversion method doesn’t work for Kindle apps such as Kindle for PC, Kindle for Android, Kindle for iPhone/iPad/iPod, etc. This is because there are native application for these platforms that support document formats in question and they should be used to access these documents.

There are no controls beyond that, no way to select a specific track other than iterating over them one by one, no way to fast forward or rewind. However files will play continuously.

Can I use a kindle without wireless or wifi connection?

Is it possible to modify a Kindle DX to permanently disable any wireless/3G connectivity, that is, so that a child (even a very intelligent one) would not be able to connect to the Internet? How? Would I still be able to use it after such a modification?
@vic, the DX doesn’t have wifi, only 3G. you would have to open it up and break the 3G modem.
After that you would have to load books on it via USB from your computer.
Just a note, if your child is that intelligent, they will have access to the Internet via libraries, friends computers, smartphones, etc where they can bypass any restrictions that are there. The kindle DX monchrome-only very slow browsning is probably not really a significant threat.
I shall be travelling in Canada and the USA and will want to send emails back home to Australia. Can I download books, send and receive emails? Whatabout wifi connections? Which particular model would be appropriate for thlis type of use? Thanks – Doug

Can you make it so books read by page numbers?
I Have not dropped my screen but it seems like there is a crack in the screen. A majority of the screen is frozen while a small part is functioning. There is Thin White lines going down parts of the screen. I called customer service and the person said that I need to Replace the entire kindle. My question is: Why do I need to replace the entire kindle….Can I just replace the screen or is it a waste of time/money?
my kindle fire does not turn on at all and it is not even charging
I had my Kindle in Europe during a recent holiday and it began to freeze. I would be reading and suddenly it would freeze. I would turn it off and on and it would eventually (2-3 minutes) turn back on and reboot automatically but would not return to the point of reading I was at. I always had to search for my page. After a few minutes it would again freeze and I would repeat this over again. Later it only let me read 2 or 3 pages before freezing. I thought it was because of where I was but upon returning home the Kindle is totally frozen and won’t respond at all. It is fully charged. Suggestions?
I bought my daughter a kindle for her birthday but it is registered to me so it says “Jeff’s Kindle” in the upper left corner. I want to change that to mu daughter’s name but leave it tied to my account. Is this possible?
My kindle screen, or rather 2/3’s of it, went out or froze on me today. I am so upset. I have rebooted it and it did not work. It was not dropped, it was not exposed to water or weather. It was working one minute, then froze the next. An ad is stuck on the top 2/3’s of the screen. I can see the home screen and pages on the bottom left hand corner. What do I do!!????
@Emily with the ‘cracked’ screen: that is exactly what happened to mine. What did you end up having to do? Is it completely broken and done?
Jeff,
Head to your Amazon.com account and open the Kindle section. Selecting “Manage Your Kindle” will allow you to rename the device to anything you like.
Sarah,
This is most likely a hardware failure and not something that can be fixed by rebooting. Your best bet is to contact Amazon Customer Service. In most cases they will make sure you are taken care of with few questions asked. I have known some customers to have replacement devices shipped to them overnight at no change to help ease the inconvenience, though your experience may vary.
Donna,
I’ve not seen that particular problem before, but it seems like your battery may be fried. Loss of power would result in your position not being saved and the page you were reading would still appear on the screen indefinitely due to the nature of E Ink, which would make it seem like it froze.
Your only real option is to contact Amazon. It would be hard to say whether this is a matter of user error (due to differing voltages? Not my specialty…) or a hardware failure. My advice is to explain the problem and leave out the context. Don’t bring up Europe unless they ask and go from there. The usual solution to even minor problems is “here, let’s send you a replacement Kindle” so you’re likely to be fine.
I have been trying to connect my Kindle to my PC via the usb cable supplied. My PC does not recognise it, although my husband”s and daughter’s connect OK. I have reset the kindle, but still no connection. Any suggestions?
I have an early DX that appears to have battery problems. I started out by needed recharging (critical)more often and now the orange light just comes on for a few seconds before going out. The screen has barely readable background but thats it. Does this sound like a battery ?
Thanks
Graham,
That does sound like a battery issue to me. It might be the battery no longer holding a charge of a failure of some other sort that is preventing the battery from charging. It would be hard to say with just that information. Either way, it is definitely a problem with the physical device and so the best option is likely to see what Amazon can do to help you out.
I think my kindle is charged up. It was working fine I turned it off, when i turned it on again it showed a dimlit screen, nothing else.when i press power it will light up green, goes rite off.so I cant access kindle to even try to find problem. I’ve had since xmas no prob.

I dropped my kindle (basic e reader) in the spa pool water. It obviously isn’t working now.
Can it be saved or is it wrecked for good? Any tips out there?

If you buy a kindle on Craigslist, the seller and assumed current owner should be willing de-register it on the spot and allow you to register it. Once you do that you won’t have to worry about it being reported stolen by the seller/former owner because it will no longer be registered to them to report stolen!
